Information for Prospective Graduate Students

I am seeking graduate students who are interested in landscape ecology and/or community ecology.  I am particularly interested in students who are interested in the following topics:

  • modeling odonate (dragonfly/damselfly) metapopulations and/or metacommunities
  • landscape ecology of the Llano Estacado

I will also consider students with other interests that pertain to aspects of spatial pattern, habitat selection, and conservation in a heterogeneous world, particularly:

  • urban ecology
  • the ecology of various animals, including scorpions, Eleodes beetles, and native bees

If you are interested in pursuing an M.S. or Ph.D. degree in my lab, you will need to do the following:

  1. Know what you're getting yourself into!  Read the PDF file found at this link to know what graduate school is all about:

And here are my lab criteria:

2.    Prepare your Curriculum Vitae (résumé), which should include all of the following items:

  • a statement about your research interests and how they are compatible with the kinds of research that I do
  • a statement about your career plans/goals
  • a brief list of your academic and professional accomplishments (degrees, GPA, GRE scores, awards, fellowships, publications, grants, presentations at professional meetings, jobs, etc.)
  • a summary of your past research experiences and skills
  • the names, addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses of 3 references

3.     Send your Curriculum Vitae to:

Dr. Nancy McIntyre
Department of Biological Sciences
Texas Tech University
Lubbock, TX 79409-3131 USA

4.     Contact me to discuss your application, ask questions, arrange a visit, etc.  Contact info: tel. 806.742.4113 ext. 280, email                   nancy.mcintyre@ttu.edu.

5.     If it seems like my lab is a good fit for your research aspirations (and vice versa), you then have to apply to the graduate programs in BOTH the Department of Biological Sciences AND the Graduate School at Texas Tech University.  Instructions may be found at: http://www.biol.ttu.edu/Graduate.aspx and an online application to the Department of Biological Sciences may be found at: https://www.depts.ttu.edu/biology/gradapp/grad_application.asp.

Annual application deadlines are February 1 to start in Fall semester, October 1 to start in Spring semester, and March 1 to start in Summer.  Applications received early are most likely to be considered for assistantships.  The Graduate School recommends that international students submit their completed application at least 6 months in advance of the desired date of enrollment, due to the length of time required to obtain a visa from the U.S. State Department.
